What are Small Groups?

At their core, small groups are casual gatherings of 8 - 12 people, typically meeting at a group members home, for the purpose of growing together in three vital relationships:  1) Intimacy with God, 2) Community with believers and 3) Influence with Seekers.  But to those who have experienced the benefits of a small group environment, they are so much more.   Small Groups are a place to know and be known, love and be loved, serve and be served.  We have women’s groups, men’s groups, singles groups and couples groups.  Most of these are divided by the general stage of life of the group members. Every group has a unique feel and personality.  Finding the right group for you can be life changing.

Why do Small Groups?

We are convinced that life change happens best in wholistic small group environments, where people can experience and process life together in community with others.  When we describe small groups as wholistic, we are saying that they strive to meet the needs of the whole person.  To us, small groups are not merely classroom-like environments where people are fed intellectually.   Nor are they just a good place to build deep relationships with other people.  And, although it is one of their functions, we do not have small groups simply to care for each other during times of need.  We have small groups for ALL of those reasons.  We believe in small group ministry because these wholistic groups provide the best environment for us to help build each other into fully transformed followers of Jesus Christ, through teaching, fellowship, mutual care and accountability.

How do I get involved?

There are several different ways to go about finding the right group for you:

  • Ask some folks you already know, personal relationships are always the most popular way to find a group and get connected.
  •  Check the directory.  We try to provide an updated small groups directory, showing what groups are available and have room for new members.  You can download or print a current directory by clicking the “Small Groups Directory” link at the top of this page.

 Leadership Opportunities

Our small group coaches, leaders and apprentice leaders are part of the core leadership of our church.  They are bible teachers, discussion facilitators, care providers, fellowship coordinators and spiritual mentors.  But, first and foremost, they are servants.  Scripture teaches us that to be a leader in the kingdom of God, we must seek to be a servant to all (Mark 10:42-45).  So, if you are looking for a high-profile position with lots of perks, this probably isn’t for you.  But, if you desire to open up your life and teach others to do the same, if you have a passion to see people grow in their knowledge and love for Christ, and if you are ready for a truly challenging and tremendously rewarding task, than we would love to sit and talk with you about small group leadership.  You can contact Reece at the church or by email at rmashaw@churchatsouthlake.org for more information on leadership opportunities.
